about the species

Quercus wislizeni, the interior live oak, is an evergreen oak found throughout interior California, from foothill woodlands to montane slopes. It is adapted to warmer, drier environments than many coastal oaks and is a common component of mixed oak forests. The species plays an important role in supporting wildlife and maintaining ecosystem function across large portions of California’s interior landscapes.

why species was selected

Interior live oak was selected due to its wide distribution and adaptation to dry conditions. Genomic data can improve understanding of population structure and adaptive variation, providing insights into oak resilience and responses to climate variability across California.
