about the species

Quercus lobata, the valley oak, is California’s largest oak species and a hallmark of valley oak savannas and riparian floodplains. It once dominated lowland landscapes throughout much of the state but has experienced extensive habitat loss. Valley oak supports high biodiversity and is culturally and ecologically significant within California’s landscapes.

why species was selected

Valley oak was selected because of its ecological importance and history of decline. Genomic data can inform restoration efforts by identifying population structure, genetic diversity, and appropriate seed sources for long-term conservation and landscape recovery.
