about the species

Quercus engelmannii, Engelmann oak, is a rare oak restricted to southern California, where it occurs in oak woodlands and savannas. The species has a limited range and fragmented populations, largely due to land-use change. Engelmann oak supports diverse wildlife and represents a distinctive component of southern California’s oak flora.

why species was selected

Valley oak was selected because of its ecological importance and history of decline. Genomic data can inform restoration efforts by identifying population structure, genetic diversity, and appropriate seed sources for long-term conservation and landscape recovery.
