California harbors extensive ecological and biological diversity. The state contains coastal lowlands, offshore islands, large alluvial valleys, forested mountain ranges, deserts, and various aquatic habitats. By sampling species within every ecoregion, we hope to summarize the full range of environmental variation that exists throughout the state.
