Dipodomys nitratoides (San Joaquin Kangaroo Rat), as the name implies, is largely confined to the San Joaquin Valley, north to roughly Firebaugh, and west into the Panoche Valley, as well as the Carrizo Plain. Several subspecies have conservation concern due to loss of habitat. Dipodomys n. brevinasus (central San Joaquin Valley) is BLM Sensitive, CDFW Species of Concern, and IUCN Vulnerable; both D. n. exilis (Fresno – likely extinct) and D. n. nitratoides (southern San Joaquin Valley) are federal and state ESA, and IUCN Vulnerable.
