about the species

Bombus sonorus (the Sonoran bumble bee) is found throughout the US Southwest and in parts of Mexico. The species is considered Vulnerable by the IUCN (when synonymized with B. pensylvanicus), and in California, its range is fairly restricted to coastal areas around the Los Angeles Basin and south to San Diego. Like all bumble bees, B. sonorus is an important pollinator, and visits desert mallow (Sphaeralcea), sunflower (Helianthus annuus), and other native flowering plants of the southwest.

why species was selected

B. sonorus is an ecologically important pollinator and is also potentially threatened, based on the species status and based on the retraction of the species range in California.
