about the species

Ariolimax californicus (California banana slug) is a large, terrestrial gastropod native to coastal and montane forests of California, particularly moist redwood and mixed evergreen ecosystems. As a detritivore, it contributes to nutrient cycling by breaking down decaying plant material and fungi, supporting soil health and forest productivity. The species is notable for its bright yellow coloration and sensitivity to temperature and moisture, making it closely tied to cool, humid forest conditions characteristic of California’s coastal landscapes.

why species was selected

The California banana slug is well suited for CCGP because it is ecologically important, widespread across forested regions, and has limited dispersal ability. These traits make it ideal for examining population structure, landscape connectivity, and local adaptation. Genomic data will inform how forest management, habitat fragmentation, and climate change influence genetic diversity in forest-dependent invertebrates across California.
