about the species

Acmispon strigosus is an annual legume, native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, with the bulk of its range in California. A. strigosus is distributed in most regions of the state except for the extreme north, and can be found in grassland, sage-scrub, and desert landscapes varying from protected wilderness to urban edges and marginal communities.

why species was selected

A. strigosus is a foundational native plant in California distributed across most of the state. A. strigosus has a key role in changing soil microbial composition by selectively rewarding beneficial nitrogen-fixing microbes, and promoting the colonization of other native flora, especially in disturbed habitats.
