about the species

Doryteuthis opalescens, the California market squid, ranges from Baja Mexico to Alaska. This short-lived species only lives 6-9 months, and is the most harvested marine invertebrate in California with landings in excess of 73 million pounds. It is the most valuable fisheries target in California, and has suffered a nearly 360% decrease in landings since 2000.

why species was selected

Recent work on market squid using SNP data indicates the presence of very subtle temporal and spatial genetic structure among Northern and Southern California spawning grounds sampled over a period of 4 months. Genomic data will provide additional resolution to inform fisheries stock structure and understand whether this genetic variation is adaptive.
